Types of sleep

There are two different types of sleep.  They are rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep; non-REM sleep is divided into four different stages.

REM sleep: In REM sleep your eyes move continuously even though your eyelids are closed. Dreaming occurs mostly in REM sleep. When in REM sleep your arm and leg muscles are temporarily paralyzed for your safety.

non-REM sleep: When you first fall asleep you are in stage one.  You sleep lightly and can be awakened by a disruption. Stage two is when your eye movements stop, in this stage your brain shows slow brain waves with bursts of rapid waves.Stage three is when your brain waves become slower and smaller. Then, in stage four your brain waves are almost non existant.

In order to feel energised and healthy throughout the day, you need to have slept through stages three and four, as these are considered deep sleep.

According to research almost one half of your sleep time is spent in both stages one and two of non-REM sleep and about one-fifth each both stages three and four of non-REM sleep and REM sleep.
